# About Pixel Rumble

Six free tools for making pixel art and getting it into a game, a post or a page.

## What it is

Pixel Rumble covers the small jobs that come up again and again when you work with pixel art: drawing a sprite, turning a picture into pixels, cutting a sprite sheet into frames, packing frames back into a sheet with an atlas, finding the exact colours of a classic console, and making an animated GIF. Each tool does one job, opens instantly and works on phones as well as desktops.

## How it works

Everything happens in your browser. Images you open are decoded, edited and saved by the page itself, using your device's processor; they are never uploaded, and once a page has finished loading it keeps working without a connection. The editor keeps your current drawing in your browser's local storage so it survives a reload. There are no accounts, cookies or ads; page views are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and never sees your images (see [privacy](https://pixelrumble.buzz/privacy/)).

The palettes come from the sources named on the [retro palettes](https://pixelrumble.buzz/retro-palettes/) page, and the dithering and colour reduction methods are the published ones named on [image to pixel art](https://pixelrumble.buzz/image-to-pixel-art/). Animated GIFs are written with the open-source gifenc library and ZIP files with fflate.

## What it is not

It is not a full painting program: there are no layers, brushes or animation timeline. For long projects a desktop editor such as Aseprite, LibreSprite or GIMP will serve you better, and the palettes and sheets you make here open in all of them.
